Whether you have been working for years, are new into a career or are starting to think that you will soon have a new career, you will probably be looking at what salary you can earn. Although a job is not all about salary, having money is important to all of us and if we can get more money, then it could make things a bit easier for us. Choosing the right career can be crucial if you want to get the best salary.

It is wise to start by thinking about what your qualifications are and your area of skill. These may very well be the same thing. You will need to consider whether you are prepared to do a job you do not like, get extra qualifications, move to a different part of the country , work unsociable hours or work for a company you do not like. If you are not prepared to do one or all of these then it is possible that you will not be able to get the highest paid job.

If you want a big salary it is likely that you will need to be at the top of the field that you choose to work in. Most highly paid people have worked a long time in their chosen career and have managed to work their way up. This is not always the case for all people and all companies, but it is worth finding out how companies work with regards to their promotion system and their pay scale. Some may give salary rises through years of service, others through promotions and others through performance related pay, so it is worth finding out.

If we think we can probably guess at who makes the most money generally in jobs, perhaps city bankers, celebrities, IT professionals or surgeons may be professions that spring to mind, but they are ones where you need to have certain qualifications and skills and they may not be for everyone. However, one area which is often forgotten with regards to being well paid is being an entrepreneur. Many people who make the most money are those that run their own businesses.

Running a business can sound really good. Being able to make the rules, work the hours you want to and then take all of the profit, but it does not always work out quite like this. It takes a lot of hard work to build up a business, you will need to work really long hours and it can be very stressful. Sadly many new businesses do not survive either and so it means that it can be a big risk. You will need to be prepared to put in a lot of hard work, endure stress, make big decisions and be flexible if your original ideas do not work out. It is something which will only suit certain personality types as well and so you will need to think about whether you have the time, commitment and energy to be able to do this.
