Promotion is really important for all businesses as it lets people know who you are, what you have for sale and draws people towards your goods and services. It is something that all businesses need to do in order to make sales but it can be difficult. With the Internet it can seem that it is easier to promote things and there are more possibilities for doing so. However, they can be expensive and there is a lot of competition, so it can be difficult finding a way to stand out from everyone else.

There are ways that you can promote your business for free though and this will enable you to be able to show your presence without having to pay out any money. You need not even get a website and you can still get none online.

The best way to advertise and certainly the most popular at the moment, is through social media. You can set yourself up with a page on a selection of different social media sites and it may be possible to link your accounts together for some of them. This can all be done for free and as long as you are active and like lots of things and get likes in return it could work really well for you. You will need to find a way to stand out though, some companies try competitions, other make quirky posts so do something that reflects you and your brand well.

Customer referrals are a really good way to get promotion for free. If someone recommends you to friends and family, they are more likely to try you as they will trust that recommendation. Encouraging people to do this can be hard but providing really good customer service and great value for money can be a really good start. You could give some incentives to those that make recommendations, such as a money off voucher for their next purchase, entry in a prize draw etc. Although this is not strictly free, it would still be a lot cheaper than paying for advertising.

You can set yourself up with a free website easily these days. It is simple to learn how to do this yourself, there are plenty of online tutorials and it is much simpler than it used to be. You may want to buy a domain, but you do not have to and you could get one for free if you would rather. You can link a website to social media and a blog if you want to really get out to as many people as you can.

A more old fashioned way to promote the business is to see whether a newspaper or magazine can do a feature about your business. Local papers tend to have more room for this but it is worth approaching anyone relevant particularly if you have an interesting story to tell. A magazine relevant to the line of work you are in could be worth approaching as well, in fact you could just try everything that catches your eye to give yourself the best chance of having something published.
