Rising bills can be a big worry for many people. Even when bills do not go up, they can sometimes seem harder to pay due to other expenses. There are some things that you can consider to help make them easier to manage.
Most companies will allow you to pay monthly, as well as yearly or twice yearly. Sometimes it is more expensive to pay monthly but it can help to spread the cost of the payments over the year. If you struggle to pay a lump sum, then consider paying monthly in order to make each payment more manageable. If you do not want to pay the extra, then save some money each month towards the bill when it arrives.
Pay all just after pay day
It is worth setting up all of your direct debits and other bill payments so that they happen just after pay day. This will not only ensure that you have enough money in the account to cover the cost of them, but also that you will be able to then know what you have left to last until next time you are paid. This may not be possible for all bills, but if most of them get paid this way it can really help.
It is worth making sure that you are not paying more for your bills than you have to. You may be able to switch supplier so that you can get a better deal. Look online and compare prices to see whether you can save money. If you do this with every person you pay out money to you could save a significant amount of money. Consider looking at electricity, gas, phone, broadband, TV, mobile, insurance, banking, lenders, fuel and supermarkets. If you could just save a small amount each month on each of these, that could really add up over the year and make you bills much more manageable.
Another approach is to use less and then your bills will be smaller. This would apply to things like fuel, gas, electricity, phone calls, food and transport. Obviously there will be a minimum amount you need to spend to stay comfortable, but it could be possible to find ways of using less of all of these so that you keep the costs down. Even simple things like turning off electrical items when you are not using them, only making phone calls at cheap times, buying own brand food and driving more efficiently, can make a difference to the cost.
Share the Cost
If you have a spare room in your home, then consider renting it out. Not only will that bring in some income for you, which you could use to offset some of the costs, you can also split some of the bills, such as electricity, gas, water etc. This could help you to be able to afford to pay them. Do remember though, that if you are living on your own, you may be able to pay less for some things.
